General Description

  • Hydroxychloroquine sulfate shows antimalarial activity against malaria parasites mainly in the intra-erythrocytic phase of its life cycle. It acts by inhibiting the heme polymerase inside the food vacuole of the parasites
  • It shows an inhibitory activity in autophagy preventing the lysosome fusion with the autophagosome
  • Some studies demonstrated that hydroxychloroquine sulfate, due to its antiviral activity can restrict HIV infection in vitro

Applications

  • Hydroxychloroquine sulfate displays antiviral and anti-rheumatic activities
  • In vitro and in vivo experiments have been performed to investigate the role of hydroxychloroquine sulfate in the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 disease
  • Hydroxychloroquine sulfate can be used in immunofluorescence assays to evaluate the antiviral mechanisms in dengue virus-2 infection. In this disease, this compound can activate the innate immune response
