Defibrinated Sheep Blood, 100 mL

Defibrinated Sheep Blood is a non-selective, general-purpose enrichment supplement that may be used in the preparation of many types of medium for the isolation and culture of pathogenic and non- pathogenic microorganisms from clinical samples (e.g. cerebral spinal fluid, pus and wound swabs, sputum, eye swabs and ear, nose and throat swabs, blood and fecal samples).

The addition of blood to culture media provides means of identification, as the ability to hemolyse blood can be used to classify certain microorganisms. The presence and pattern of hemolysis, the size of the zone of hemolysis, and colony morphology can be used together to identify isolates cultured using blood agar, such as CNA. Blood agar, such as CBA, are recommended for the primary culture of a number of human pathogens, including Gram- positive microorganisms. Defibrinated Sheep Blood is collected aseptically, then processed mechanically to remove the fibrin; this prevents the blood from clotting.
